Just to add, as a social studies teacher, I do assign homework. To appreciate history, I think it's important for students to connect what we talk about in class with their own lives and the world around them; that means that work must take place outside of class for connections to be made. And I believe that students should be reading news every day, either in the newspaper or magazines or online. And I believe that the more we read, the better. So, I do give some homework, and hope it's effective.
